About Priyam Bruyat
Priyam Bruyat is an effort to showcase the rich tapestry of literature in multilingual India, that is "aa Sindhu sindhu Bharat" - the land that extends from the Sindhu river to the sindhu as in ocean.
Motivation
Growing up in a literary environment , and a multilingual one at that, has a long lasting impact. The beauty of the written word, the magic of sung words, the insights gained from a well articulated thought....one could go on and on.....leave an indelible mark on the soul. Words are meant to be understood. Bharat offers an almost infinite amount of literature, owing in part to the several hundreds of languages coexisting in a civilization that is hundreds of thousands of years old. Priyam Bruyat is a small attempt to showcase pieces of literature from different Indian languages and explain their meaning in English, for the world to enjoy and appreciate. We turn to English invariably - the universality of the English language makes it a very useful tool.
What to Expect
Priyam Bruyat is taken from the Sanskrit Subhashitham
सत्यं ब्रूयात् प्रियं ब्रूयान्न ब्रूयात् सत्यमप्रियम् ।
प्रियं च नानृतं ब्रूयादेष धर्मः सनातनः ॥
satyaṃ brūyāt priyaṃ brūyānna brūyāt satyamapriyam |
priyaṃ ca nānṛtaṃ brūyādeṣa dharmaḥ sanātanaḥ |
Speak what is pleasant, speak what is true. There is no need to speak a truth that is unpleasant or hurtful. Yet also, never speak an untruth just because it is pleasant or agreeable. That is the eternal Dharma, or the right thing to do, always.
Priyam Bruyat attempts to ignore the linguistic discord brewing among speakers of various languages in Bharat and wishes to create a space where "priyam bruyat" rules - just be pleasant, in any language!
